Social Addiction

Social networking is frustrating. I decided to try out Posterous due to a suggestion on FriendFeed by Mike Arrington (TechCrunch). After signing up, I started thinking what I was going to post about and if it should be anything specific. That made me start thinking about how many social networks I've signed up for in the last month. Hell, even the last two weeks. It makes me kind of embarassed to think about it. Why do I keep signing up for these things? Why does anyone? Whatever the reasons, I feel like I can't help it! I want to sign up for nearly everything and at least check it out.  But WHY?

It has only recently become very obvious  to me that the "tech" community has become addicted to being social. We sign up for a thousand different social network, constantly on the hunt for something better. Something that will help us be more social and improve our lives in some way.

The questions I keep asking myself are:

1. Will it ever end? Is there a social network out there that is currently, or will be some day, perfect? One that serves all our needs? What ARE our needs?
2. Do social networks make our lives better? Or are they a hinderance to face-to-face interaction?

Hit me up in the comments and let me know what you think.

Hey Kasey... first off, thanks for trying posterous. We're super glad you're here.

As for the perfect social network, I think that's kind of like asking for the perfect radio station, or the perfect TV station. If anyone tries, it'll come out a lot like muzak.

I'm biased, but I think social media lets you immerse yourself in ideas, stories, and art in a way that is pretty awesome. It's not as good as meeting people in real life and hanging out -- but it's better than sitting in front of a TV for 10 hours a week.

I am reminded of Clay Shirky's great essay about TV vs. social media: http://www.herecomeseverybody.org/2008/04/looking-for-the-mouse.html

Anyway, if there's anything we can do to make your stay here more enjoyable, do let us know -- help@posterous.com.

Hi Garry! Thanks for saying thanks :)

You pose an interesting idea - I think the perfect radio station has a solution - the iPod (maybe I'm biased too..). As for the perfect tv station - one that plays Law & Order on a loop.

Seriously though, I agree with you. I guess I never thought of social media as being a creative outlet.
I don't know that I ever thought about what it actually meant to me, or to anyone else.

And Clay's essay was fantastic - I appreciate you sharing it. That is one of the best posts I've ever read about social media.

Millennial. You're it. Get with the program. Get over it. Questions?

Me? Wannabe Millennial. Trying really hard to keep up with you youngsters. You'll be social networking ten times faster than me when I'm in a nursing home, using a walker, and wearing depends. Okay, feel better?
